Are you investing more time in your dream (passion) or your nightmare (dissatisfying job)?

I recently had a conversation with a woman who said the reason she didn't spend more time working on her dream was that when she got home she was too tired. I responded by saying, "No, the reason you don't spend more time working on your dream is that you are not accountable. You are just as tired when you wake up at six in the morning, but you show up to work anyway because you are accountable to your managers to be there. If you had someone, such as a coach, to hold you accountable to your dream, you would work just as hard. How many people would show up to work if they were not accountable to be there?"

Accountability is the secret key to wealth that most people fail to capitalize on.

The CEOs of Fortune 500 companies have shareholders and a board of directors to hold them accountable for achieving higher profits in the most efficient manner. If chief executives fail to perform, they will be promptly removed from leadership. However, the average individual or small business owner has no external driver to push him or her to generate more income or to use better methods and tools.

It is this lack accountability that causes most individuals and entrepreneurs to procrastinate, make poor financial decisions, and to take on unnecessary risk.

According to statistics from the American Society of Training and Development, the probability of achieving a goal if you hear an idea is 10%. If you create a sound plan, the probability of achieving your goal rises to 50%. However, if you commit to someone else that you will achieve your goal and have a specific accountability schedule set up with that person, the probability jumps to 95%.

Essential Contents of a Marketing PlanEvery marketing plan has to fit the needs and situation. Even so, there are standard components you just can't do without.

A marketing plan should always have a situation analysis, marketing strategy, sales forecast, and expense budget.

  • Situation Analysis: Normally this will include a market analysis, a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats), and a competitive analysis. The market analysis will include market forecast, segmentation, customer information, and market needs analysis.

  • Marketing Strategy: This should include at least a mission statement, objectives, and focused strategy including market segment focus and product positioning.

  • Sales Forecast: This would include enough detail to track sales month by month and follow up on plan-vs.-actual analysis. Normally a plan will also include specific sales by product, by region or market segment, by channels, by manager responsibilities, and other elements. The forecast alone is a bare minimum.
