working with new clients who are at various business and financial levels, it is always
enlightening to observe the differences between a client who has a million-dollar
net worth and a client who has a negative net worth, or those clients running multi-million-dollar
businesses and those who have been struggling to grow their businesses as solo entrepreneurs.
The
biggest differences are not intelligence, education, or being "born into money,"
but their vision, belief in themselves and team approach to building wealth and
their businesses.
Typically,
the biggest challenges for low net worth individuals and struggling
entrepreneurs are their inability to separate emotion from financial and
business decisions and to overcome their psychological barriers and limiting
beliefs.
Some of the common psychological barriers and conditions impacting financial and business success include:
- Fear of loss and the underlying feelings that money represents: freedom, control, dependency, security, and self-worth
- Self-defeating belief system, negative thinking
- Low self-esteem
- Lack of belief in one's own ability
- Fear of success
- Fear of failure
- Procrastination
- Reluctance to seek help
- Uncomfortable feelings when networking and building relationships with others

Often, even when decisions do not require money, a low net worth client will procrastinate and question what a high net worth client would view as a "no brainer."
For example, if an expert or trusted advisor suggests a proven path to success based on their years of experience, a low net worth client's first thought might be:
- "Yes, but..."
- "That won't work for me."
- "I prefer to do it my way."
- "I'm not ready now, but maybe next month or next year."
These are often signs of psychological barriers holding them back, not lack of money, time or the other reasons that they may give themselves. |  |
Many of my wealthiest clients will be the first to admit they are not financial or business geniuses, but that they are able to achieve success because they can separate emotion from their business decisions. One of the ways they are able to do that is by surrounding themselves with competent advisors and following their advisors' proven systems and processes.
No matter what business or financial stage you are in, it is important to examine what potential psychological barriers may be holding you back.
I often look at my own approach to growing my businesses and ask myself, "What are my limiting beliefs when compared to my mentors and advisors who have grown hundred million-dollar and billion-dollar companies?"
Addressing the answer to that question always leads to a financial breakthrough along with more free time and happiness.
