Financial Terms of the Week
Stop Loss Order An order to sell a stock or other financial instrument when its price falls to a specified level. Stop Loss orders are used as a reliable way for investors to manage risk. Investors may also use what's known as a "Trailing Stop Loss" where the stop loss or sell price is set at a fixed percentage below the stock's current trading price. If the stock price rises, the stop loss price rises proportionately, but if the stock price falls, the stop loss price does not change. This is a helpful strategy that allows investors to limit their maximum possible loss without limiting their maximum possible gain.
Put Option A trading instrument that allows bearish investors to hedge and/or profit from falling stock prices. When sold, put options are used by bullish investors as a way to generate income for their portfolios. A put option is a contract that gives the holder the right to sell 100 shares of a particular stock at a predetermined price on or before a certain date. Are your stocks in a downtrend?
