Being Prepared in the Event of an Emergency
In an age of increased terrorism, natural disasters, and identity theft, it is more important than ever to think about financial and business disaster recovery.
Here are seven quick BARON tips that can save you and your family valuable time and money in the event of an emergency:
- Make sure you have adequate life and disability insurance. The primary goal of insurance is to replace lost income and to pay off outstanding debts in order to ease the burden on your estate and family members. Many individuals unwisely choose only life insurance and ignore the need for disability coverage. Realize the average person has a 1-in-4 chance of being disabled between the ages of 35 and 65, which is actually three times higher than the odds of dying during the same period.
- Prepare a Living Trust and Living Will. A living trust is an estate planning instrument often used in place of a will to avoid probate and to speed the transfer of assets to heirs in event of your death. A living will, not be confused with a regular will, provides instructions on how your medical affairs should be handled in the event you become incapacitated. Both documents will ease the burden on your family at a difficult time by making it clear how you wish to have your affairs and estate handled.
- Store copies of vital financial information in a secondary location such as a safe deposit box. This includes: tax returns, financial account information, insurance documents with related videos or photographs, and your trust and will documents.
- Make sure your spouse and/or a trusted third party has access to all vital documents, account numbers, and financial information in the event of an emergency. Your family should be well prepared with more than one person knowing where to go to access key information.
- Protect yourself from identity theft by regularly checking your credit report. The FTC estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year.
- Backup important personal and business information. This includes: hard copy, cell phone and email contact lists, calendar data, internet bookmarks, personal projects, music and software downloaded from the internet, and your small business financial data and website.
- Do a risk analysis at least once a year to determine if any factors have changed that are exposing you and family to greater risk and work with your team of professionals to insure against or mitigate that risk.
Remember, it is important to live for today, but to always be prepared for the uncertainties of tomorrow.

What is the most important thing a person needs to know about investing in stocks, what is the first thing I should do when looking for good stock investment candidates, and is there a rule of thumb for cutting losses and taking profits?

There are two very important things that a person must keep in mind when it comes to investing in stocks. First, is to never buy a stock without looking at its chart and also checking its fundamental data, particularly its sales, earnings, and cash flow numbers. One should invest only in companies that are making money and showing year-over-year growth. You can find a company's stock chart and fundamental data using the Stocks and Mutual Funds section of BaronSeries.com. The second thing is to always have a plan and exit strategy in place before you buy a stock.
To find leads, I would suggest taking advantage of our free trial for Investor's Business Daily newspaper. In the Making Money section, there is an IBD Timesaver Table which lists over 50 top-performing companies which are a great starting point for further research.
A general rule for cutting losses is 8-12% with an upside profit potential of 3-5 times your potential loss. This would mean taking profits somewhere between 30-50%. That said, an individual's exit point may vary greatly depending on whether one's investment strategy is short- or long-term, the volatility of the stock, the spread (the difference between the asking and bid price or what you would pay for the stock and what you could sell it for), the commissions on the trade, the winning probability of the trading system, and one's available capital.

Corporation
A legal entity separate and distinct from its owners having its own rights, privileges, and liabilities. Corporations may enter into contracts, own assets, borrow and loan money, earn income, pay taxes, sue and be sued. A corporation, in most instances, limits the liability of its shareholders to the assets of the company. By incorporating, the assets of the business become separate from the owners' personal assets. This legal distinction can protect the owners' savings, residences, and other personal assets from being targeted in lawsuits against the company. Corporations are also eligible for certain tax deductions and credits not available to individuals. The vast majority of corporations are formed with the intent of making a profit; however, there are many corporations which are also formed as not-for-profit entities. A C corporation (or "C corp.") is the most common structure for U.S. based corporations. C corporations are taxed under Subchapter C of the Internal Revenue Code.
